What happens to my Abu Dhabi property if I die?

Short answer

The UAE charges no inheritance tax, but you still need a plan. Non-Muslim foreigners can register a will with the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department so the property passes as they wish under Abu Dhabi's civil family law. UK-domiciled owners may also face UK inheritance tax on the property, so co-ordinate both sides.

In Abu Dhabi

  • No UAE inheritance tax.
  • Abu Dhabi's civil personal status law for non-Muslims, introduced in 2021, gives a clear route for foreign owners.
  • A will registered with the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department makes the transfer quicker and simpler for your family.

In the UK

If you are within the UK inheritance tax net, overseas property can count towards your estate. Speak to an estate-planning adviser who works with both countries.
